Clearing of Bundala National Park
In a continuing effort to serve the community, ODEL recently announced
their involvement in the “Clear a Hectare Project” currently underway
at the Bundala National Park. This unique initiative organized by
the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka (WNPS) in
collaboration with MAS Linea Aqua (Pvt) Limited, aims to rid a 60
hectare area of two highly threatening plant species - Cactus and
Proposis Juliflora.
Due to the rapid proliferation of these invasive species, the profuse
natural vegetation and wild life at the national park has become seriously
endangered. Therefore, by clearing the entirety of the park over various
stages, this project aspires to completely eradicate the two alien
plant species from the area.
In the initial stage of the project, ODEL has pledged its support
towards the cause by funding the clearing of six hectares of land,
out of which four hectares have already been purged of the Cactus
and Proposis Juliflora plants.
