Embark’s Niko goes to Hollywood with New Collection
Niko is back with his new collection. The mascot of Embark famously featured in the popular clothing line launched his new collection at Odel with a fashion show today.
Styled ‘Niko Goes to Hollywood,’ the new collection transliterates the glamour and glitter of Tinsel Town to more than 60 items of casual clothing, with a storyline that features ODEL founder Otara Gunewardene’s pet pooch enjoying the glamorous lifestyle of Hollywood.
While Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart have their five-pointed stars on the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard, Niko’s star adorns a new range of trendy attire that will contribute to the well being of street dogs in Sri Lanka as they clothe fans of the Embark brand.
With fitting symbolism, the launch of the new collection took place on International Homeless Animals Day, which is observed worldwide on 21st August.
Stylish, trendy, and innovative, the ‘Niko Goes to Hollywood’ collection of tops, shorts, skirts, slippers, caps and accessories features new psychedelic colours, unique embellishments and clever slogans. Smaller sizes that can cater even to wearers of xxs have also been intorudcued with this collection to cater to the young customers who are passionate about the brand and its cause.
The ‘Niko Goes to Hollywood’ collection is now available at all 13 ODEL stores in
Sri Lanka, including the ‘Backstage’ outlet at Crescat.
Embark began in March 2007 with the aim of reducing cruelty to animals. The initiative includes a range of activities from sterilization, puppy re-homing, caring for injured stray animals and educating the public about the importance of animal welfare. Since its inception, Embark has sterilized 4286 strays, rehomed over 192 puppies and has treated many injured dogs.

ODEL Graces Battaramulla with Its 13th Store
Battaramulla became host to another chapter in the unfolding story of ODEL when the iconic fashion retail brand opened for business in this residential suburb on Friday, 16th July, with a characteristically stylish inauguration.
The company’s 13th store and the first since its phenomenally successful IPO, is located on the corner of the Koswatte, Talangama intersection and comprises of more than 8,400 square feet of shopping space on four floors. It accommodates the main departments that make up the ODEL experience, including the Ladies section spread on the Ground and the First Floors, Gents section on the Second Floor and the Kids section on the Third Floor.
The distinctive white edifice also houses the popular ODEL departments ‘Backstage,’ ‘Embark’ and ‘Delight.’
“We are very pleased to open our latest store in Battaramulla and offer the ODEL experience to people in this area, many of whom are already our customers,” ODEL founder and CEO Otara Gunewardene said.
“We know this is something that they were eagerly looking forward to. They can now shop conveniently in their own neighborhood without battling traffic and spending time on the road,” she added.
The new outlet has adequate parking and will be kept open for business seven days a week from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
Sri Lanka’s definitive department store chain ODEL is also synonymous with tourists for shopping and the company’s centrally-located flagship store in Colombo 7 is one of the most sought-after tourist shopping destinations in the island.
The ODEL chain now comprises of stores at Alexandra Place, Maharagama, Kohuwala, Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa, Panadura, Nugegoda (Warehouse), Dickman’s Road, Ja-ela, Majestic City, Crescat (Backstage), Battaramulla and at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Nations Trust Bank, MAS Active and ODEL Go Kart their Way to Victory in Aid of Street Dogs
At the recently concluded Embark Go Karting Challenge Trophy 2010 held at SPEEDROME Go-Kart Centre Pelawatte three corporate teams ended the day of high-speed excitement on a high note. While the Nations Trust Bank team sped to the finish line to clinch the challenge trophy, the MAS Active team finished 2nd and the ODEL team came in 3rd. The other participating teams were from HSBC, Leo Burnett and Sampath Bank.
The event was held in two stages. Since rain interrupted the full day’s races on 24th April 2010, the second stage of the go-karting races was completed on 7th May 2010.
Embark is ODEL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort launched in 2007 to protect and care for homeless street dogs. The funds collected from projects such as this go toward sterilization of street dogs; puppy re-homing campaigns, education and awareness raising campaigns and caring for injured stray animals. The Embark Go Karting Challenge Trophy 2010 event was held to raise funds for an Embark Transit Shelter.
It was indeed rewarding to witness the support extended to Embark’s CSR effort by the companies represented at the event and the individuals present on that day. While the participating Corporate Teams had to make a donation in order to be able to enter the competition the spectator fees collected at the entrance too went towards the event’s cause. All funds raised at this event will be used to build an Embark Transit Shelter in the near future.

Police Action Against Counterfeiters of Exclusive ODEL Designs
Several persons have been arrested for Intellectual Property Rights violation after the Colombo Crimes Division conducted a series of raids using novel investigation methods on a complaint by ODEL, the country’s leading fashion and lifestyle retail chain.
A special team led by an Inspector of Police under the direction of a Director at the Colombo Crimes Division, launched investigations into large stocks of counterfeit ODEL branded garments which were being sold illegally. Several designs created by the designers at ODEL are unique and have become popular globally. Many of these designs are considered trendsetters in the fashion culture of Sri Lanka.
These designs have been registered in Sri Lanka as trademarks and are legally the exclusive property of ODEL. However, many of these protected designs and artworks have been subjected to the ever growing piracy of Intellectual Property.
After months of planning and detailed investigations, a raid was conducted at a storage point in Mount Lavinia which subsequently led the investigation team to a location in Maharagama where the counterfeiters operated a factory to print the designs. The raid resulted in the seizure of fabric samples, transparencies and printing screens of several ODEL artworks and designs.
Counsel Jeevantha Jayatilake and his juniors Ralitha Amarasena and Tazio Ratnayeke represented the interests of ODEL LIMITED, instructed by Julius & Creasy. Police investigations are continuing.
